Wassaw Island is a fantastic cool-weather hiking destination. Wassaw is an uninhabited, geologically young barrier island that has never been cleared for timber. This makes the island a great place to showcase barrier island ecology. One of the best ways to do this is a short (1 km) hike across the island to the beach. However, if longer hikes are desired, there are plenty of trails on Wassaw. In warmer weather, the beach is a less crowded alternative to nearby Tybee Island or Hilton Head Island, especially on weekdays.
